STA Certificate in Teaching Swimming

The STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming qualification expands on the teacher’s expertise to include competitive strokes, survival and rescue skills, diving, and competitive starts and turns—allowing teachers to deliver swimming lessons from non-swimmers through to advanced participants.

The Learner

The STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming provides the opportunity for holders of the STA Level 2 Award in Teaching Swimming to expand on their knowledge and skill set to include advanced swimming stroke techniques and aquatic skills.

Learners may complete this qualification for a career specifically in swimming teaching. Alternatively they may undertake this qualification to compliment another role.

STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming: Swim club swimmer, leisure duty manager, leisure assistant, student, sports coach, swimming teacher, personal trainer, lifeguard, teaching assistant, fitness instructor.

The Course

The course is comprised of a mixture of theory content and practical poolside learning, enabling the learner to acquire the advanced technical knowledge and practical hands on experience of delivering lessons to improver to advanced swimmers.

Learners will acquire the skills required to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of progressive swimming lessons for groups of up to 20 participants of improver to advanced ability.

  • Planning, Delivering, Assessing and Evaluating Swimming Lessons
  • Understand a Swimming Teacher’s Role
  • Understanding the Health and Safety Requirements for an Aquatic Environment
  • Understanding the Scientific and Learning Theories Relevant to Swimming Teaching
  • Planning, Delivering, Assessing and Evaluating Competitive Swimming Strokes
  • Planning, Delivering and Assessing Advanced Swimming Skills
  • Understand the Safety Requirements for Advanced Swimming Skills
  • Understand Swimming within Education

Assessment

The STA Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming is tutor-assessed through the completion of:

  • Worksheets
  • Schemes of work
  • Lesson plans
  • Lesson evaluation forms
  • Practical teaching.

On the final day, the learners will complete an external assessment which comprises of a 30-minute practical lesson to a minimum of 4 participants of advanced ability.

Renewal

This course does not carry an expiry date—instead learners are encouraged to keep their knowledge and skills up-to-date through completion of continuing professional development (CPD).
