STA Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid

The STA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification is a one-day course designed for those who may be required to perform emergency first aid within a childcare workplace setting, in voluntary and community activities, or for personal interest and development. No previous experience is required, so learners can begin their training whenever needed.

The qualification covers a range of skills and procedures specific to child and infant casualties and focuses on managing emergency situations involving babies and young children.

The Learner

The STA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid course is for individuals who work or intend to work in a childcare setting. This includes those who act as appointed emergency paediatric first aiders within their setting.

Learners who successfully complete this qualification will have the skills and knowledge to administer emergency paediatric first aid within the workplace, with skills that are transferable across a wide range of industries.

The Course

The course is comprised of a mixture of theoretical technical knowledge and practical hands-on tasks to enhance the learner experience.

The Emergency Paediatric First Aid course covers a range of paediatric emergency first aid situations, including:

  • Managing an unresponsive casualty
  • Paediatric CPR
  • Choking
  • Shock
  • Bleeding and wounds
  • Minor injuries

Training is delivered in line with current Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines and accepted first aid practice.

Assessment

The STA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid qualification is tutor-assessed through the completion of:

  • A multiple-choice theory assessment paper
  • Practical demonstrations

When You Get Your Qualification

The qualification lasts for three years

Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout the duration of your qualification so it is always there to refer back to if needed

We recommend that you attend an annual refresher to keep your knowledge up to date

Renewal

This course carries a three-year validity period. Learners are encouraged to keep their knowledge and skills up to date through regular staff training. HSE strongly recommends first aiders undertake an annual refresher during any three-year certificate period.

To remain qualified, learners are required to complete a new STA Level 3 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid course before the certificate expiry date.

How to Take Your Qualification Further

Once you have gained your qualification, you may be appointed as a designated emergency paediatric first aider for your workplace.

You may wish to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing additional STA first aid qualifications or CPDs.

Alternatively, learners may wish to complete additional STA qualifications such as manual handling, fire marshal, lifesaving, swimming teaching and pool plant to support a career in the leisure industry.
