STA Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator

The STA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator is a half-day course designed for those who want to learn how to deal with an unresponsive adult, child or infant, including how to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and safely use an automated external defibrillator.

This qualification is suitable for learners with specific responsibilities at work, those involved in voluntary and community activities, or for personal interest and development. No previous experience is required.

The Learner

The STA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator course provides learners with the skills to deliver lifesaving CPR and safely use an AED on an adult, child or infant.

Learners may work or volunteer in an environment where there is a higher risk of sudden cardiac arrest and an AED unit is present on site. This qualification also provides an ideal further training opportunity for learners who already hold a first aid or lifesaving qualification but require specialised basic life support and AED training.

The skills gained are transferable across a wide range of industries and therefore appeal to a broad range of learners.

The Course

The course is comprised of a mixture of theoretical technical knowledge and practical hands-on tasks to enhance the learner experience.

Learners will develop the knowledge and competence required to identify casualties suffering from cardiac arrest, competently deliver lifesaving CPR and safely apply an AED, both as a single operator and as part of a team.

Training is delivered in line with current Resuscitation Council (UK) Guidelines and accepted first aid practice.

When You Get Your Qualification

  • The qualification lasts for three years
  • Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout the duration of your qualification so it is always there to refer back to if needed
  • We recommend that you attend an annual refresher to keep your knowledge up to date

Renewal

This course carries a three-year validity period. Learners are encouraged to keep their knowledge and skills up to date through regular staff training.

To remain qualified, learners are required to complete a new STA Level 2 Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator course before the certificate expiry date.

How to Take Your Qualification Further

Once you have gained your qualification, you may be appointed as a designated basic life support first aider for your workplace.

You may wish to develop your knowledge and skills further by completing additional STA first aid qualifications or CPDs.

Alternatively, learners may wish to complete additional STA qualifications such as manual handling, fire marshal, lifesaving, swimming teaching and pool plant to support a career in the leisure industry.
